On the front lines of care, Waltz LTC strives to keep you up to date on the changes that matter most to your community. As of August 18, 2014, all products (brand names Ultram/Ultracet) containing Tramadol are now classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration as Schedule IV under the Controlled Substances Act.
The DEA states that Tramadol prescriptions may by filled up to six months after the date prescribed, and may be refilled up to five times within six months after the date on which the prescription was issued. Tramadol will continue to require a prescription and shall be maintained either separately from all other records of the registrant or with the registrant’s ordinary business records in a form where the information required is easily accessible.
Patients taking products containing Tramadol are now required to have a valid controlled substance prescription that includes the following information:
- Date written
- Patient’s full name and address
- Drug name, strength, and dosage form
- Quantity prescribed and number of refills
- Directions for use
- Prescriber’s name, address, and DEA number
- Prescriber’s signature
